What’s Stocked in Your Heart? (Proverbs 10:14)

Listen Here:

Proverbs 10:14

The wise lay up knowledge,
but the mouth of a fool brings ruin near.

If you know me, you know I’m very passionate about meditating on and memorizing Scripture, and this verse is one of the reasons why.

“The wise lay up knowledge…”

The wise store up knowledge. They keep wisdom. They don’t let it pass them by or enter in one ear and exit the other. They keep it. They store it. They treasure it. Where? In the heart.

Why? Because what you think about most eventually moves into your heart – and what’s in your heart is what spills out of your mouth.

And like we saw yesterday in Proverbs 16:23-24, when the heart is full of wisdom, the mouth speaks words that give life.

We see that same idea here today, but from the other side:
“…but the mouth of a fool brings ruin near.”

In other words, if you store up foolishness – guess what comes out? Foolish words. Words that wound. Words that lead to ruin. Because if your heart is a wreck, your words will be too.

So what does this mean for us, plain and simple?

It means that what we bring to mind matters.

What we dwell on is what we deposit into the heart – and what’s deposited will eventually come out in our words and actions.

That’s why the wise don’t just casually skim Scripture – they store it up. They meditate on it. They memorize it. They stockpile the truth of God’s Word because they know it shapes their heart, their language, and their life.

I think the wise are like someone stocking a pantry – but instead of junk food, they’re loading it up with rich, nourishing items. Because whatever you stock is what you’ll end up serving.

And so they’re intentional – taking notes, hiding the Word in their heart, storing it up – so that when the moment comes to speak, they pour out grace, truth, and life to others. And it would do us well to do so too… because ultimately, the greatest treasure we can store up is Christ Himself.

Jesus, the Wisdom of God, took our ruin on the cross so that we could be filled with His life. When we store up His Word, we’re storing up His heart – and it changes everything.

  • So what have you been stocking and storing up in your heart lately?

  • Is what you’re meditating on leading to life-giving words – or to ruin?

  • What’s one verse you could start storing up today to anchor your heart in Christ?

Let’s pray together.
